Anthropic just aimed Claude directly at your QuickBooks. Here's what it actually does.
Spent twenty minutes this morning arguing with my accountant's invoicing system. It timed out. Twice. Then Claude launched something that made me feel personally targeted. Good timing, Anthropic.
Claude just got a small business mode
Just last week — Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business. It's a toggle inside Claude Cowork that connects Claude to the tools most UK small businesses already pay for: QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365. No extra charge beyond your existing Claude licence. No dev work. No consultant. Just connect and pick a job.
What's actually in it matters more than the announcement. Anthropic says it covers payroll planning, month-end close, cash-flow forecasting, invoice chasing, and campaign creation — 15 ready-to-run workflows in total across finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR, and customer service. The key detail: per Axios, Claude doesn't act unilaterally. You approve before anything sends, posts, or pays. That's important. It's the difference between an AI assistant and a liability.
The timing is interesting. Anthropic's revenue run rate reportedly hit $30 billion this year. They didn't need to build something for the ten-person plumbing firm in Leicester. They chose to. Whether that's genuine mission or a smart land-grab on a massive underserved market is a question worth keeping in mind.
The tools aren't the problem
Only 31% of UK businesses using AI report a positive return on investment. Budget increases haven't moved that number. More tools haven't moved that number. And now Anthropic has launched 15 pre-built workflows at no extra cost, which is genuinely useful — but also won't move that number on its own.
Over 80% of businesses see no measurable productivity impact from AI, and the consistent finding is that the cause isn't a lack of access. It's using AI without committing to a specific workflow and measuring it. People paste things into Claude occasionally, feel vaguely productive, and call it done.
Claude for Small Business solves the setup problem. It doesn't solve the commitment problem. That one's on you.
Three workflows to turn on first
All three are inside Claude for Small Business on Claude Cowork (Pro £20/month, Team £25/user/month). Toggle the feature on at claude.ai, connect the relevant tool, and start the workflow. You approve every output before it leaves.
Cash flow forecast — Connect QuickBooks and PayPal. Ask Claude to settle your current cash position, build a 30-day forecast, and flag what's overdue. Takes about three minutes. Normally a spreadsheet job you push to Friday.
Invoice reminders — Connect QuickBooks. Tell Claude which invoices are past due and ask it to draft a reminder sequence in your voice. You approve each one before it sends. No more staring at the screen trying to sound firm but not rude.
Month-end close packet — Connect QuickBooks. Claude reconciles your books against settlements, flags anything that doesn't match, writes a plain-English P&L, and packages it ready to forward to your accountant. Anthropic's words, not mine: "export a close packet you can forward straight to your accountant."

The invoice you've been avoiding
You know which one. The client who's 47 days overdue, who you genuinely like, who you don't want to make things weird with. So you draft a message, delete it, decide you'll do it tomorrow, and tomorrow becomes three weeks.
This is the exact workflow Claude for Small Business is built for. Connect QuickBooks, pull up the overdue invoices, and tell Claude: "Draft a payment reminder for [client name], keep it warm but firm, reference the original invoice date, and offer two payment options." It writes the message. You read it, tweak the one sentence that doesn't sound like you, and hit send.
The awkwardness was never really about the email. It was about composing it from scratch while also trying to figure out the right tone for a relationship you care about. That part is genuinely hard. Claude handles the blank page. You handle the relationship. That division of labour is actually how this works best — not AI replacing the human bit, just removing the friction that was stopping you from doing it at all.
