Double Opt-In
Double opt-in is a two-step subscription process where a new subscriber must confirm their email address by clicking a verification link before being added to your list.
What Is Double Opt-In?
In a double opt-in flow, someone enters their email on your signup form (first opt-in), then receives a confirmation email with a verification link. Only after clicking that link (second opt-in) are they added to your active subscriber list. This two-step process ensures the email address is valid and belongs to the person who signed up. While double opt-in results in slightly lower signup numbers (10-20% of people don't complete the confirmation), the subscribers you do get are higher quality — they've proven their interest and their email address is confirmed valid. Single opt-in, by contrast, adds subscribers immediately after the first signup without verification.
Why It Matters for Newsletters
Double opt-in protects you from bot signups, spam traps, typo addresses, and malicious list bombing attacks. It's required by law in some countries (Germany, for example) and is strongly recommended everywhere. Lists built with double opt-in have lower bounce rates, fewer spam complaints, and higher engagement.
Best Practices
- Send the confirmation email immediately — within seconds of signup
- Make the confirmation link prominent and the email clear about what to do
- Set confirmation links to expire after 24-48 hours
- Follow up once if the confirmation isn't completed within 24 hours
- Redirect to a 'thank you' page after confirmation to reinforce the action
