Return Path

The Return-Path (also called envelope sender or bounce address) is the email address where bounce notifications and delivery status reports are sent.

What Is Return Path?

The Return-Path is set in the email's envelope (not visible to recipients in most email clients) and is separate from the From address that recipients see. When an email bounces, the receiving server sends a notification to the Return-Path address. This allows the sender to process bounces and maintain list hygiene. In the context of email authentication, the Return-Path domain is used for SPF alignment in DMARC — the domain in the Return-Path should match or be a subdomain of the From address domain for SPF-based DMARC to pass.

Why It Matters for Newsletters

A properly configured Return-Path ensures you receive bounce notifications and can maintain your list. It's also important for DMARC alignment — if your Return-Path domain doesn't align with your From domain, SPF-based DMARC checks will fail, potentially affecting deliverability.

Best Practices

  1. Use a Return-Path domain that aligns with your From domain for DMARC compliance
  2. Ensure bounce notifications are being processed and acted upon
  3. Don't use a no-reply address as your Return-Path
  4. Monitor the Return-Path inbox for delivery status notifications

How Aldus Handles This
